The Origins of the Forging Process

The forging process dates back to at least 4000 BC, however, the exact year is most likely earlier. Back then, metals such as wrought iron and bronze were forged to produce various war weapons and hand tools. These type of forgings continued until near the end of 19th century for similar purposes and using similar metals.

19th Century Forgings

Throughout the 19th century, forge smiths were particularly skilled at hand and open die forgings of wrought iron. Then, the forging industry saw a major breakthrough in 1856 thanks to the invention of the Bessemer steel-making process, which enabled forgers to have a huge supply of low-cost steel for major forging productions.

20th Century Forgings

The Industrial Revolution and World War II both lead to the development of better forging equipment and processes. Eventually, electrical motors and induction heaters enabled forged rolled rings to be produced quicker, easier, and more effectively than ever before.

Modern Forgings

Now, we have computer controlled hammers and presses that are capable of making rolled ring forgings in a variety of materials for countless applications.

What Are Seamless Rolled Rings?

Seamless rolled rings are metal parts that are produced through a process called ring rolling. This process takes a circular preform of metal that has been previously upset and pierced to form a hollow “doughnut” shape. The doughnut shape is then heated above the recrystallization temperature and places over the idler or mandrel roll. This idler roll then moves in a series of motions and rotations to reduce the wall thickness and increase the diameters until the rolled ring takes its desired shape. Rolled rings can be produced in configurations that range from flat, washer-like parts to tall, cylindrical shapes and heights ranging from less than an inch to more than 9 feet tall. As a result, seamless rolled rings are great metal parts that be made to your exact specifications.

Rolled Ring Forging Vs. Plate Burnout

Metal Rings are needed for several different types of applications. One of the most widely used metal components, metal rings can vary in size, thickness and in diameter. In order to achieve a strong, durable and cost effective metal ring for your project, there is one process that stands above the rest, but which is it? Keep reading to learn the differences between the rolled ring forging and plate burnout processes in order to manufacture a metal ring.

Rolled ring forging is the best process for rolled ring components

Plate Burnout

In the Plate Burnout process, which is just one of the many processes in which a metal ring can be achieved, the metalworker begins with a plate of metal. Once the component specifications are known, the plate is punctured in the shape and size of the metal ring that is needed. Essentially, the ring is just punched out of the metal to form in the metal ring. This type of method make the metal ring more susceptible to fatigue.

Rolled Ring Forging

In the manufacturing method of seamless rolled ring forging, the waste of the metal that is punched out is avoided and the piece and stronger and more durable. A donut shape is formed from metal and then is forged into the metal ring that is needed. The size and diameter is shaped from this donut shaped metal, as the metal is at extremely high temperatures and is malleable. This process saves wasting the metal from a plate when the ring is punched out, which makes it a more cost effective method. This process also results in stronger components.

Steel Forgings | What Are the Different Types of Forgings?

To create the high quality and durable steel forgings ordered by our customers, Ferralloy employs different processes depending on the component specifications. One of these processes, Forging, can be subdivided into more complex processes that are utilized according to what the metal piece will need to become. What are the most popular types of forging?

Steel forgings from Ferralloy Inc are high quality components

Open Die Forging

The reason that this process is referred to as open die forging is because the metal is not confined by any impression dies during the forging process. The process uses hammers and different tools to press and pressure the metal into the desired shape of the steel forgings. Open die forgings usually result in irregularities between the different steel forgings because there is no impression that all of the forgings are being molded into. To achieve the correct, final dimensions, the metal normally has to be machined.

Impression Die Forging

This is the opposite of open die forging, also commonly referred to as closed die forging. Where the metal is shaped in the open in open die, in impression die forging there are two or more dies that contain impressions that are brought together around the stock and causes the deformation into the desired shape. In closed die forging the steel forgings can be shaped into more complex components because of the dies that are used to form the metal.

Seamless Rolled Ring Forging

In some ways, this forging process combines elements of both open die and impression die. The metal stock is pierced to create a donut and then shaped, in a somewhat open forging process, into a ring. The rolled ring forging process is used to make high pressure resistant steel forgings, such as gears, engine bearings for aircrafts and flanges, to name a few.

Rolled Ring Forging Process can be accomplished at Ferralloy Inc!

What is the Process?

To begin the seamless rolled ring forging process, an ingot or billet is cut to size and then upset to achieve mechanical properties. What this means is that the starting stock pushed between flat dies at its plastic deformation temperature in order to achieve the proper shape. Then the center of the ingot’s center is punched to create a ring rolling “donut”. The stock would be hot at this point and the middle would be pierced to displace the metal radially.

Once the punch out has been done and a complete hold through the stock is created, the ring is now ready for the ring rolling operation. It begins with ID and OD pressure being applied to the ring, and as the pressure increases, so does the ring diameter. When the desired ring diameter is achieved, the seamless rolled ring forging process is complete.

Rolled ring applications range from ring gears that can be used in industrial and farm equipment to bearings and flanges. Rolled ring components can be seen in power plants, chemical plants, freighters, cargo ships and wind mills.
