A bearing's races are just metal rings with a racetrack groove in which the rolling parts are supported. By guiding the rolling element around the bearing, this raceway stops them from slipping out of the bearing while it is in use. The inner race, in which the shaft travels, is the smallest ring, and the outer race is the largest.
Typically, bearings have an inner and an outer race. These metal rings start out as a piece of steel tubing that is cut using a device resembling a lathe to a size just a little larger than the necessary dimensions. To account for shrinkage during heat treatment, the race is initially cut larger than necessary.
