The production of seamless rolled ring forging is performed by a process called ring rolling. Ring rolling takes place on rolling mills. These mils vary in size to accommodate the production of rings that range from just a few inches to over 300 inches and in weights from a single pound to over 300,000 pounds. The starting piece of metal is cut to the size and weight needed to make the ring. This provides the structural integrity and directional flow.
After it has been formed into the desired size and shape, the metal is then “punched” and pierced to create a donut shape needed to make the ring.
After it has been punched and pierced, the diameters of the ring are increased as the continuous pressure reduces the wall thickness. The axial rolls control the height of the ring as well as it’s being rolled.
This process is continued until the desired size of the ring is achieved.
