When it comes to forging, there are many different options out there. Two of them are open die and seamless rolled ring forging. Let’s take a look at the difference between open die and seamless rolled ring forging as it pertains to ring rolling.
Open Die Forging
Open die forging gets its name because the metal being used is not confined by impression dies. It allows for a vast range of shapes and sizes. Everything from forgings that way just a few pounds to massive pieces as large as 150 tons can be made via open die forging. Some of the shapes that can be produced with open die forging include basic shapes, sold shafts, contour-formed metal shells, and hollow cylinders.
Seamless Rolled Ring Forging
Seamless rolled ring forging begins with a circular preform of metal that has already been pierced to form a hollow shape. The ring is heated and rotated in order to lessen the thickness of the wall. Seamless rolled rings have significant advantages. Those include:
- Better heat tolerance
- A wider range of materials
