What are Cobalt Alloys?

Cobalt alloys are metal alloy. But it’s not just any metal alloy. This alloy is a cobalt-chromium “superalloy”. It was designed specifically for high wear resistance and superior performance in hostile environments. It’s resistant to cavitation, erosion, corrosion, galling, and abrasion. The combination of Cobalt and Chromium also enables the metal to have an extremely high melting point. It is typically used in temperatures ranging from 600 – 1112 °F (315 – 600 °C). Molybdenum or tungsten and a small amount of carbon are also sometimes added to cater to specific applications. Cobalt alloy was developed in the early 1900s as an alternative for cutlery that stained easily.

What are Cobalt Alloys Applications?

Due to its favorable properties, there are numerous cobalt alloy applications. Some of the major applications include saw blade facing and acid-resistant machine parts. It has greatly improved the production of poppet valves, valve seats, and exhaust valves for internal combustion engines. What is Machining?

What are Inconel Alloys?

Steel Forgings | What Are the Different Types of Forgings?

Open Die Forging

The reason that this process is referred to as open die forging is because the metal is not confined by any impression dies during the forging process. The process uses hammers and different tools to press and pressure the metal into the desired shape of the steel forgings. Open die forgings usually result in irregularities between the different steel forgings because there is no impression that all of the forgings are being molded into. To achieve the correct, final dimensions, the metal normally has to be machined.

Impression Die Forging

This is the opposite of open die forging, also commonly referred to as closed die forging. Where the metal is shaped in the open in open die, in impression die forging there are two or more dies that contain impressions that are brought together around the stock and causes the deformation into the desired shape. In closed die forging the steel forgings can be shaped into more complex components because of the dies that are used to form the metal.

Seamless Rolled Ring Forging

In some ways, this forging process combines elements of both open die and impression die. The metal stock is pierced to create a donut and then shaped, in a somewhat open forging process, into a ring. The rolled ring forging process is used to make high pressure resistant steel forgings, such as gears, engine bearings for aircrafts and flanges, to name a few.

Investment casting (also known as lost-wax casting) is an industrial process based on one of the oldest known metal-forming techniques. It was developed over 5500 years ago and continues to be an integral part of metalworking to this day. Investment casting takes a wax outline of a part and coats it with a ceramic material. It is then heated until the wax is melted out of its center. Molten metal is then poured into the hollow ceramic mold. The metal hardens, gets broken out, and the part is made.

Why Should I Use Investment Casting?

There are numerous explanations why people decide to use investment castings. Here are the 5 main reasons why you should consider the investment casting process:
