While the baskets can be made out of a variety of materials, steel fabrications are the best for a number of reasons. Heat Resistance

Obviously, when it comes to a heat treating basket, the biggest need is heat resistance. With steel, the heat resistance far exceeds that of plastic or other materials. The melting point of a basic stainless steel alloy is about 2,550 degrees Fahrenheit while even the strongest of plastics has a melting point of 750 degrees Fahrenheit.

High Load Capacity

On average, steel has a much higher tensile strength than plastic. The higher tensile strength of steel allows baskets made from this material to handle loads that would crush a frame made of plastic.

Lasts Longer

While there are many factors that can cause a plastic basket to fall apart, steel baskets, are able to resist those factors. They include being impervious to:

  • High temperatures damaging the polymer’s bonds
  • Chemicals soaking into the basket and contaminating it
  • Oxygenation of the basket decaying its molecular structure

What are heat treating baskets?

Forged Furnace Roll Trunnions

Ferralloy, Inc. began shipping an order for 120  furnace roll trunnions, or bell ends as they are sometimes referred to, for a new heat treating furnace ordered by a large international steel producer.

The requirement for forgings in this application is somewhat unusual as this component is typically supplied as a sand cast component. For reasons related to the inherent mechanical properties of a forging, we were asked if we could source the billet material in the desired chemistry, forge the trunnions, and rough  machine them to the drawing dimensions. We produced the open die forgings, which were then normalized and machined.  The forgings will be welded to centrifugally cast tubes and then the entire assembly will be finish machined before field installation in the new furnace.

The forgings weigh 70 pounds in the rough machined condition and were produced from a grade of heat resistant alloy steel.

Fabrication to Casting Conversion

Ferralloy, Inc. was recently contacted by a large automotive parts manufacturer to design a cast heat treating basket that would replace their current fabricated design.

The customer provided Ferralloy, Inc. with their specific requirements such as operating temperature, the need to build in outside pockets for lifting and also to consider their need to stack the baskets on top of each other.

The resulting design gives them more strength, better heat resistance values and an estimated life expectancy increase of more than 100%.
