Titanium Fasteners | Types of Materials Used to Make Fasteners

When it comes to fasteners, they can be made out of a variety of different materials. The material chosen depends on the use as the different materials react differently to different factors in the environment. While titanium is one of the popular materials used to make fasteners, let’s take a look at some of the other materials used in addition to titanium fasteners.

Steel

Steel might just be the most popular material used to make fasteners. They are offered in a wide range of grades for different types of uses. As a result, machine screws, carriage bolts, studs, nuts, and cap screws are all fasteners that are made from steel.

Aluminum

When it comes to aluminum, it is the least costly material that can be used to make fasteners. Aluminum fasteners are classified as hardenable and nonhardenable and weigh about one-third as much as steel. Some grades of aluminum are even stronger than that of mild steel. Cold-formed bolts, screws, rivets, and machine-screw nuts are just a few of the things that are made with aluminum.

Titanium

Titanium fasteners are largely found in the aircraft industry. Their excellent corrosion resistance and good high-temperature performance make it the ideal material for aircrafts and aircraft parts. As a result, joints are the most popular item that titanium is used to make, including joints loaded in shear and tension-loaded joints.

Where can I find titanium fasteners?

Titanium Fasteners | Why Are They Used?

Titanium fasteners are essential, especially in both aviation and aerospace. Although steel is the primary fastener material used, titanium is found in certain applications. Let’s take a look at some of those situations where titanium is used over steel, as well as some of the advantages of titanium fasteners.

Benefits of Titanium

When it comes to fasteners, titanium has a higher tensile strength. They are resistant to high temperatures, seawater, and galvanic corrosion. While titanium might not be ideal for every application due to its moderate ductility and low work hardening rate, it is ideal in many aeronautical and naval applications.

Where Is Titanium Found?

Titanium fasteners are used in applications where high strength to weight ratio, excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, high corrosion resistance, and good fatigue strength are desired. These include:

  • Military and commercial maritime applications
  • Submarine masts and exteriors
  • Landing gear and engine components
  • NASA launch vehicles and spacecraft
  • Commercial and military satellites

Who has titanium fasteners?

Titanium Fasteners | Where Can I Find the Best Titanium Fasteners?

Titanium fasteners are becoming more and more important in the manufacture and assembly of products that have high-performance standards. As a result, it is incredibly important to know the different grades when it comes to titanium. Let’s take a look at some of the different grades of titanium fasteners

Grade 2 Titanium

This is one of the most common types of titanium and is the most used in the fastener industry. It is also the purest form of it, containing 99% titanium. Grade 2 titanium is idea for situations where you need very good corrosion resistance such as in environments with a lot of salt water and brine. They are also extremely resistant to other chemicals including chlorides.

Grade 5 Titanium

Grade 5 titanium has been modified to give it extra strength. It contains 90% titanium with the rest of it being made up of 4% vanadium and 6% aluminum. It has twice the strength and half the weight of comparable steel fasteners and maintains the corrosion properties of Grade 2 titanium.

Grade 7 Titanium

While grade 7 titanium isn’t used as often as grade 2 or 5, it’s still quite common in the fastening industry since it has increased resistance against corrosion.

Grade 23 Titanium

Grade 23 titanium has been created with improved mechanical properties even at cryogenic temperatures, making it less likely to suffer from fatigue and to crack.

What are titanium fasteners?

Titanium Components | Fasteners | Tubing

Titanium has a huge number of uses and common applications, a lot that most people may not be completely familiar with. Titanium components like fasteners and tubing are important for many industrial applications, but why are titanium alloys used versus other metals? What makes titanium components a great option for industrial and other applications?

Titanium Characteristics

Titanium Inconel Tubing

What makes titanium alloys an important part of the metalworking industry? It has many useful and effective characteristics. Although steel is one of the strongest metals, titanium matches the strength of steel, but it is lighter. Titanium has the highest strength to weight ratio of any structural metal. A very strong and light weight material has a lot of uses in several different industries. Titanium can also withstand high temperatures and pressure. These characteristics make titanium a highly desirable metal because it can be used in a wide variety of situations and products undergoing a range of processes. What are some of the most common titanium alloy applications?

Titanium Fasteners

Titanium components, like fasteners, are mainly used in aircrafts. An aircraft needs to withstand a lot of pressure and still be light. Titanium is also corrosion resistant and good high-temperature performance, which are also important features in aerospace components. Titanium fasteners have other applications as well. In the aerospace industry, however, they are a highly important component.

Titanium Tubing

Because of the high resistivity to corrosion and high temperature, it is a perfect material for many different components. Titanium tubing can be used in either aerospace components or marine components. Deep sea drilling components, marine parts or at desalination plants, titanium tubing can come in handing in a variety of different situations.
